Touch the Dark is a thrilling ride through a vampire, werewolf, demon, fairy, and ghost riddled modern earth. Cassandra Palmer a young clairvoyant or “seer” is on the run in this urban fantasy from her vampire guardian Antonio who killed her parents when she was only 4 to get complete access to her sight and ability to tell the future.

Fortunately for our heroine she has kept it a secret that she is able to see and interact with the spirits of the dead, this secret and the fact that her roommate Tomas, who she thinks is simply a down and out run away liker her, is a vampire lets her escape Tony’s hitmen only to be tossed directly into the middle of a powerful struggle in the magical community by a vampires bid for power.

Karen Chance does an amazing job of pulling you immediately into the story, the first two lines of this novel grabs your focus and perks your interest. “I should have known I was in trouble when I saw the obituary. The fact that it had my name on it was kind of a clue.” These lines invoke so many questions: Who is this? How are they seeing their own obituary? Is someone trying to kill them? and more importantly What is going on?. Needless to say I was hooked and immediately new I was in for an action packed and intriguing story.

The world that Cassandra lives in is our world, adorned with normal humans going on about their lives with out every realizing that vampires, shape shifters, or the supernatural is out there. An even greater symmetry exists in that not even the supernatural believe that all other supernatural creatures exist in particular ghosts and shades. A fully realized world pulling in elements of our history including the ancient seers of Delphi, Cleopatra, Rasputin and the Romanovs, medieval europe, and the conquistadors of South America. It is easy to tell how well researched and thought out the story is that Karen Chance writes for us to enjoy.

This story is told fully from the 1st person perspective of our heroine. As such you get a glimpse into all the various levels of intrigue that are occurring in the magical community but not the full picture. The plot line stays immersed in Cassandra’s struggle to get a little revenge while remaining in control of her own life and destiny. You will be amazed by the amount of plots that are happening and fully relieved when finished that more is on the way, that this enjoyable tale is well from over.
